THE GALWAY Choral Association perform Duruflé’s Requiem Opus 9 in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, this Saturday at 8pm, as part of a fundraising concert for Enable Ireland.
The choir, under musical director Norman Duffy, will be accompanied by Galway Cathedral organist Ray O’Donnell and contralto soloist Sarah Ellen Murphy. Requiem Opus 9 was written by French composer Maurice Duruflé (1902 – 1986 ) in 1947, and shows the influence of Gabriel Fauré. A relatively accessible work, Norman Duffy describes it as having "a calm, melodic quality”.
Funds raised will go towards equipment for a family room at Enable Ireland's local centre, which will be used for life skills with teenagers and adolescents, as well as for liaising with parents about their child’s progress or therapy plans.
Also performing is Cór Mhaigh Eo, an award-winning choir based in Castlebar, directed by Dr Brian Lennon. They will sing works by composers ranging from Monteverdi to Lauridsen and Lucaszewski.
Tickets are €15/12 from Opus II, High Street (091 - 500300 ), Enable Ireland, or from choir members. See also www.galwaychoral.ie
