Sustainable transport projects in Galway are to benefit from funding of more than €2.14 million, including €500,000 for bus lanes and cycle infrastructure along the N17, between Parkmore and the junction with the N6.
The funding will also see €500,000 for road safety improvements in Salthill and Knocknacarra; €200,000 for the design and planning of a greenway from Spanish Arch to Bearna; €200,000 for addition of new bike stations as part of the Galway Bikes Scheme; €100,000 for the design of improvements to access the Parkmore Business Park; and €100,000 for new tour/commuter bus parking in the city centre.
Fine Gael Galway West TD Seán Kyne has welcomed the funding, which brings to more than €17 million funding for projects in Galway over the last five years. He said it will allow the Galway city and county councils to progress existing transport improvements as well as introducing new ones.
“A variety of transport options is important for the city and more so as the city grows," he said. "The funding for the bus parking and for the new greenway from the west of the city will help promote public transport and cycling. I very much welcome the €200,000 for the Galway Bikes Scheme. The bike scheme is a hugely positive addition to the city but has been limited to the core city centre. This new funding will help expand the scheme outwards which will, I firmly, believe increase usage.”
