The Drink - ghostly indie pop with inventive guitar

Acclaimed new band, led by Galway's Dearbhla Minogue, to play Róisín Dubh

DREAM POP with a hefty dose of Rory Gallagher and Hendrix influence have made British/Irish trio The Drink an exciting and critically acclaimed prospect, and Galway will see why this week.

The Drink play a free show at Strange Brew at the Róisín Dubh this Thursday [January 21] at 9pm. The band was formed in 2011 by Galwegian Dearbhla Minogue, a singer-songwriter/guitarist who grew up listening to Irish and American folk music, who met rhythm section Daniel Fordham and Dave Stewart, formerly of post-rockers Flying Kites, in London, not long after she moved there.

The trio went on to release a handful of EPs before releasing their debut album, Capital. The Drink's sound has been compared to Throwing Muses, Field Music, and Lush by MOJO, while Minogue's guitar playing has drawn praise from The Guardian, the paper declaring her one of the most inventive guitarists at work today. Indeed her guitar playing is a key element of the band's sound, with the Irishwoman citing Rory Gallagher and Jimi Hendrix as her chief inspirations. "My favourite part of the gig now is not when I'm singing but when I'm just playing guitar," she has said.
