Warm up for festive runs begins with East Galway AC challenge

The fifth annual East Galway AC Four Mile Challenge will take place on Sunday over a challenging course.

The club event will provide an ideal warm-up race for athletes preparing for two famous events over the Christmas - the annual Goal mile on Christmas Day, and the famous Fields of Athenry race that takes place on St Stephen's Day.

Entry to the East Galway four mile race is €12 online or €15 on the day, children’s race is €5 and family rates are available.

Goal, the sports people's charity, organises the Goal mile at Christmas time with some 130 events all over the country. The Galway Goal mile takes place at NUIG athletics track at Dangan on Christmas Day from 10 to 13. This is its 14th year and all are welcome to run, walk, or crawl a mile for Goal. All ages catered are for and families, in particular, are encouraged to attend.

The Fields of Athenry, takes place the following day, Sunday at 11am, and has become one of the most popular in the country. Last year more than 1000 took part - a new race record. Entries close on December 23.

Fallon runs for Ireland

Keith Fallon of GCH competed on the Irish Under 23 Cross Country team in Sunday's European Cross Country Championships in the south of France. Jonathan Davies of Great Britain took victory over the fast and largely flat circuit of the racecourse, while Fallon placed a solid 59th overall in his Irish debut. In doing so he helped the Irish squad to seventh team placing overall, along with fellow squad members Thomas Moran, Brandon Hargreaves, Sean Tobin Hugh Armstrong (of Ballina AC ), and Aaron Hanlon.

Kiltullagh results

The Kiltullagh 10k and 5k races were held Sunday with the in form Gerry Carty of GCH taking a clearcut victory in the 10k event. He won in an excellent time of 35.05, ahead of Craughwell’s Damien Larkin second in 36. 13, and Sean Murphy of Mayo AC third in 36.44.

Sinead Brody of GCH won the women's event in 42.45, with Colette Gill and Rena Deely filling the minor placings.

In the 5k race, Craughwell AC athlete Ben Ryan took a narrow win over Seamus Leddy of GCH, coming home in 18.42 to Leddy’s 18.51. Caron Ryan won the women's race

Thornton takes Dublin victory

Gary Thornton of GCH returned to road racing with a win in the Aware 10km race held in the Phoenix Park in Dublin on Saturday, running 30.41 for victory. Jason Broderick of Craughwell AC continued his rich vein of form, clocking 32.43 for fourth spot on the day.
