Franciscan, Dominican, Carmelite, and Augustinian monks played a central role in the history of medieval Connacht, and that history will be discussed at a public lecture next week.
Friars Of The Mendicant Orders In Medieval Connacht, a talk by Professor Tadhg O’Keeffe, will be given to the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, in The Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, on Monday December 14 at 8pm.
These monastic orders arrived in the province while it was being settled by the Anglo-Normans in the 13th century, but they were also instrumental in the Gaelic resurgence of the late Middle Ages. The lecture will also examine the architecture of some of their friaries.
Prof Tadhg O’Keeffe is former head of the UCD School of Archaeology. He has published nine books and more than 100 papers on aspects of medieval archaeology and history. All are welcome to attend. See www.gahs.info
