Give up your non-perishables for Galway Simon food appeal

Galway Simon Community is appealing to the public for donations of non-perishable foods including tinned food, pasta, rice, cereal, tea and coffee, soups, treats, as well as hygiene products, and fire packs.

Galway Simon Community are currently working with over 180 people to keep them out of homelessness. Every year, the homeless charity provides food hampers to each of their clients, which is made possible by the food donations they receive from the public around Christmas.

“The Galway Simon Food Appeal is focused on the people who receive Tenancy Support Services.” says Karen Feeney, Community Outreach Manager at Galway Simon Community, “These are people who are living independently in their own households. For them, these food hampers are an important support at Christmas, when money is tight and expenses for energy and heat are high.

“There is an enormous symbolic value when we deliver the hampers as it shows our clients that people in the wider community do care about them, and that in itself means more than money”.

Last year, the charity delivered approximately 150 food hampers to their clients. This year, however, they plan to give out over 200 hampers due to the increased demand on their services.

The hampers are allocated to clients and services based on their needs. Donations can be dropped off by appointment to Galway Simon Community at Unit 8, Liosban Industrial Estate, Galway. Contact Fiona on 0858598548 to make drop off arrangements and for further information.
