South Connemara fire fighters to work with county ahead of opening of first fire station

Fine Gael TD for Galway West and Mayo South Seán Kyne has welcomed confirmation that from this month the fire fighters from the new South Connemara fire station will be accompanying colleagues from Clifden and the City on call-outs as part of their final phase of training.

The joint operations will continue until February after which the fire fighters from the An Cheathru Rua station will handle the emergency calls for the South Connemara area.

This week final inspections are being made by the County Council of the new station in An Cheathru Rua, located in a specially refurbished premises made available by Udaras na Gaeltachta.

Commented Deputy Kyne: “I am delighted after the years of campaigning that the new fire station will be open this month. “The fit out of the station is complete due to the capital funding of €180,000 which the County Council and the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, an agency of the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government, provided.

“The nine new fire fighters have undertaken comprehensive with the assistance of members of the Clifden Fire Service and others.

“I would like to commend the County Council, Údarás, the former Environment Minister, Phil Hogan and the local campaign group, Choiste Chearta Chonamara, for their work in securing this vital service for Connemara.

“Ending this gap in the fire brigade service has been among my top priorities as a TD for Galway West. I’m delighted that the station is up and running and I wish the new team of fire fighters, along with their colleagues around the county, the very best in their crucial job of keeping Galway’s communities safe.”
