Chair of the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District Fianna Fail Cllr Martina Kinane believes there is an onus on her to afford constituents of the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District factual information regarding inadequate 2016 budget allocations for the area.
Cllr Kinane said she believes the allocation of funding towards roads in the Athenry–Oranmore Municipal District is totally inadequate for 2016, as it has been for the previous 10 years.
“The largest variance arises in relation to the allocation for each municipal district is in the area of roads funding. The roads funding has traditionally been allocated on the km basis per municipal district.”
She states that in the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District, local roads account for nine per cent and regional roads account for seven cent of the county network. The next largest heading in the Budget relates to maintenance of social housing and in this regard the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District counts for 2.8 per cent of the stock of social housing which again would be significantly lower than any other municipal district.
Cllr Kinane said that as a member of the Strategic Policy Committee (SPC ) for Roads Transport and Marine, she had hoped that a fair proposal could be found in order to bring about extra road funding for the area.
