SOME PEOPLE are honest about their influences, and make no bones of where their inspirations lay. Take Dublin singer-songwriter Anderson and his most recent single 'Cecilia's Sister'.
In the later stages of working on the song, Daniel Anderson realised he had unwittingly used part of the melody from Simon & Garfunkel's 'Cecilia'. Instead of hiding the fact he chose to highlight it, rewriting the final chorus to make reference to the faux pas; "I fell for the feeling I got from this song but Cecilia was there all along".
Yet there is no question of Anderson being some musical magpie, re-imagining others' work as his own. Indeed the success of his debut album, Patterns, released in September, confirms this. It was both Nialler9 and Dan Hegarty's album of the week; while Jim Carroll of The Irish Times described Anderson as “the real deal” and 'Patterns' as “one of the gems of the current season”.
Anderson is also becoming an in-demand concert attraction throughout Ireland, and Galway will have a chance to see what the fuss is about when he plays the Róisín Dubh on Friday November 27 at 9pm. Not bad for a former apprentice tradesperson, who built an entire recording studio single-handedly, then wrote, produced, and mixed his full debut album alone.
