Secondary school pupils, teachers, and career counsellors will find a new format at GMIT’s upcoming open days on Friday October 23 (9.30am to 12.30pm ) and Saturday October 24, with a new focus on learning and development games and activities.
This year, the schools liaison office has added new interactive events to the programme schedule, including a learning games zone, smart careers networking challenges, a SUSI grant clinic, and CAO options talks. In the games zone, students and their teachers can take part in a range of challenges in STEM, business, and arts such as a laser grid, a smart car, design a postcard, mind storms, culinary challenges, real or Photoshop, and DIY yourself, among others.
In the smart careers zone, industry guests will take part in speed networking; students will have an opportunity to meet a range of professionals including engineers, artists, designers, accountants, hotel managers, marketers, and scientists. GMIT’s industry guests are offering their time and advice so that CAO applicants understand the job roles and the type of courses students need to study in order to follow a particular career path.
This special open day event is open to students from transition year up to Leaving Certificate level. On Friday October 23, a special social media workshop and a CAO information session will take place for guidance counsellors and teachers from 10am to 12.30pm, followed by a networking buffet lunch in the Connemara (training ) Restaurant in GMIT’s College of Tourism and Arts from 12.30am to 1.30pm.

“This is a brand new open day concept for GMIT where we have changed the focus to be a morning of interactivity and learning challenges,” said GMIT schools liaison officer Dr Carina Ginty. “Participants will interact with a range of exciting games and activities while also networking with industry guests to discover their career paths and learning journeys. In addition, SUSI is on site running finance clinics and we have a range of talks and exhibits on the 75 programmes available on the CAO from GMIT.”
Due to the high level of interest in the new concept learning development and challenges events, it is essential that pupils and teachers register their school/class attendance. Visitors to the Dublin Road main campus can avail of a free shuttle bus service which will run to the Centre for the Creative Arts and Media (formerly known as the Cluain Mhuire campus ) from 9.45am, with the last bus returning from CCAM at 1.30pm on Friday October 23 and 12.30pm on Saturday October 24.
