Maree ladies find form

In their last home game of the season Maree Basketball Club’s senior ladies finally unleashed the potential they have been showing in patches all season with a 78-37 victory over Team Kilkenny.

Maree now faace five away games to play to complete their first National League season, starting with a fixture against Ulster Rockets in Belfast on Sunday.

A young team with many still at school or college, Maree have experienced an up and down season as they get to grips with the tough reality of National League Basketball. However on Saturday, the team came of age, and although Kilkenny never gave up, Maree maintained their pace to the end.

The first quarter remained close throughout, with Caoimhe Clancy sinking two fabulous threes along with another from Carol McCarthy. Accurate free throws from captain Niamh O’Hagan ensured Maree finished 15 - 14 ahead.

However in the second quarter Maree started pulling away with scores from Hannagh Coen and Colleen McInerney followed by two from Nicola O’Connell. Maree’s McCarthy turned up the heat with another three, followed by two superb drives as the home side established a 33-24 half-time lead.

Maree continued to show their strength, and in the fourth quarter they showed their true form, scoring 29 points to Kilkenny’s nine.
