Moycullen maintain their push

Moycullen head into a crucial three weeks of National League basketball action for the final shake-up of divisional honours.

With the National Cup already secured, Moycullen are now in the hunt for more honours, and first up is a possible conference title.

Just two points behind Team Garveys, St Mary’s Castleisland, every point is vital as they chase valuable home court advantage for the play-offs, and next up is another trip south, this time to Tralee.

Hot on the heels of their cup victory, Moycullen maintained their momentum last weekend with two comfortable victories over Killarney Heights, St Paul’s (73-48 ) and Queen’s, Belfast (76-42 ).

A lethal display of shooting in the first quarter gave Moycullen an unassailable lead in the first fixture against Killarney. In a dream opening, Cian Nihill connected on 12 points, Mindaugus Kurcenkovas left a vapour trail from his constant penetrating drives and scores, and the team led 32-11 lead at quarter’s end.

Killarney showed some desire on their home court and were back within 19, 43-24 at the half. However by the fourth quarter coach Mardon gave his bench some well earned court time. Youngsters Paul O’Brien, James Brophy, Dylan Cunningham, David Lee, and Gerald Lyons limited their opponents to a measly seven points to ensure Moycullen maintained their momentum.

In the second game of a double header weekend Queen’s were well off the mark against a Moycullen team playing with great confidence, and once again coach Mardon used the game to give substantial minutes to his emerging young talents.
