Galway’s success in national basketball continues as Calasanctius Oranmore team celebrate victory in the Girls u-19 A Final Schools League final. Oranmore overcame Mercy Waterford by 70 - 69 in a hugely entertaining final at the National Basketball Arena. With little between the sides throughout, Waterford held a one-point lead at half time, but Calasanctius grabbed a four-point lead to set up a dramatic finish. With 20 seconds left on the clock a massive three-point play from Mercy’s Tracey Power got the Waterford school to within one point, but the Calasanctius girls held their nerve to claim the silverware for a second successive year. The MVP was awarded to Oranmore’s Carol McCarthy who grabbed 21 points.
