SILENT MOVES, a film inspired by the silent comedies of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Harold Lloyd, and starring actors with intellectual disabilities, will be shown in the Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday October 20 at 8pm.
Silent Moves was created under the national Ignite Arts & Disability initiative, and was made by internationally-renowned Irish artist Aideen Barry - who for many years was based in Galway - along with artists from Western Care’s Ridgepool Training Centre and Scannán Technologies. Shot over an eight month period in and around Ballina, it uses stop-motion animation, slapstick, movement, and mime, facilitated by Irish dance artist and choreographer Emma O’Kane.
Each screening will be fully accessible with audio description, hearing loops, etc. Irish Sign Language interpretation will be provided for the ‘Meet the Makers’ sessions afterwards, featuring some of the participating artists from the project, alongside representatives from Ballina Arts Centre and Mayo County Council Arts Office.
"Art is one of the greatest tools we have as humans to convey our unhappiness, our grief and our feelings of injustice, loneliness and unfairness," said Aideen Barry. "It can also be our greatest tool. It can be a sledgehammer that can shape the very world in which we live."
