Win for Galway WFC in league opener

ntinental Tyres WNL on Saturday when they grabbed a 2-1 victory on their third successive meeting with Peamount United in Dublin.

Having lost to Peamount in both the cup and shield in their previous two fixtures, Galway will be delighted to have achieved a valuable win over the Dubliners at the third time of asking.

They can now head into the league season with great confidence, when next up on the calendar is a visit from Castlebar Celtic on October 31.

Galway were quickly off the mark when Jennifer Byrne headed the visitors into the lead on seven minutes after Peamount keeper Michelle Watson could only parry a Galway corner.  At the other end GWFC had Tina Hughes to thank for keeping them in the lead when on 10  minutes she produced a wonder save to deny Clare Kinsella whose shot was heading for top corner.

It took another 33 minutes for the next score to arrive, and it was Peamount’s Amber Barrett who grabbed the equaliser after breaking down the left before cutting inside to fire past Hughes.

Galway, however, took the game to Peamount in the second half, playing some fine football. And they were soon rewarded when player of the match Lisa Casserly found the net with a low strike after a number of Galway players had chances of their own.  Five minutes later Savannah McCarthy headed over at the back post from a Lynsey McKey corner, while the Peamount keeper was forced to produce a couple of great saves  to deny Caroline Carter and later McKey.
