New plays, new playwrights, at Múscailt One Act Play Series

ST PATRICK, trollied teenagers, culture clashes, bus stops, and clampers are some of what audiences can expect to see in this year’s Múscailt One Act Play Series.

Nine plays will be performed at the university’s Bank Of Ireland Theatre during this year’s Múscailt which runs from Monday February 9 to Friday 13. The series offers NUIG students the opportunity to have their work performed on the stage.

The best writer will be presented with the Jerome Hynes Memorial Award on Friday 13. Prizes will also be awarded for best actor, actress, director, and production.

The plays for this year will be:

Geriatric Saint Patrick by Declan Mungovan. A man claiming to be Saint Patrick battles with the HSE to keep his bed at the nursing home. On the way he muses about his life’s work, ageing, and reality TV.

Open Heart by Justine Nakase is a series of grotesque love poems from different characters exploring pain, longing, and the desire to connect. Trollied by Róisín Stack begins with two girls and a trolley, armed with some cans, in a car park on a damp night. It can only lead to trouble.

These plays can be seen on Tuesday at 1pm.

Stopped by Tara Waters looks at a relationship which continues despite a serious lack of communication after a tragic death within the family years before. Headbangers by Eoghan Timoney centres on a young, frustrated, man coming to terms with the world and finding it is a colourful and exciting place to be.

Clamped by Stephen Reilly centres on Stan, a clamper whose life is passing him by. Can he engineer a happy future? These plays can be seen on Wednesday at 1pm.
