Galway WFC are looking for revenge when they play their first home game under lights in Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday (7pm ).
Peamount United are the visitors - familiar foes who forced Galway out of the Continental Tyres Women’s FAI Cup on Sunday, despite Galway having dominated the tie for long periods.
The opening half saw the westerners take charge in both territory and possession, but at the break they had only one goal to show for their dominance. This came on the 16th minute when Lynsey McKey finished after Aislinn Meaney saw her efforts blocked by United keeper Michelle Watson on the double.
In the second half Peamount came more into the game, but for long periods the Galway WFC back four and 17-year-old debutante Anesi Igunma in goal dealt competently with any threat. Galway continued to press, but just could not find the target in the final third.
In contrast when the chance fell to Peamount, they took it, with Amber Barrett making no mistake when rounding Igunma before finishing in the 80th minute. Then just as extra time looked on the cards, a corner to Peamount on the right saw the ball fall to Barrett inside the six yard box and she tapped home.
It was a cruel blow to GWFC, but they will have their opportunity to avenge that defeat when Peamount return west in what should be a super occasion for Galway. Galway know a victory will see them finish top of the group in this first Saturday night fixture under lights at Terryland.
