“From dereliction to delight” is how Aoibheann McNamara has described her journey in converting a rundown derelict warehouse in the heart of Galway city into a contemporary urban home. She will host an informal chat on this exciting and challenging project at her home in Folan’s Lane, Henry Street, this Saturday, October 3, at 4pm.
Ms McNamara will be joined at the talk by Patrick McCabe, architect for the conversion; Aoife Considine, architect and chair for the afternoon; and Rosie Webb Galway city architect.
This inclusive forum will highlight other opportunities for re-working derelict sites in Galway city, as the country tries to grapple with an impending housing crisis.
Galway city has many derelict properties and derelict sites that would benefit from energy and vision to remodel the way we live and to enjoy the best of urban life. Galway’s relationship with the water has been, historically, undervalued and underdeveloped, and now is the time to reimagine this wonderful asset.
Aoibheann McNamara’s conversion is only a micro starting point but should give courage to those who are considering a redevelopment challenge.
Open House, Galway’s architectural festival, has been paused for this year, and it is hoped that Open Home with Aoibheann McNamara on Saturday will provide an architectural forum for lively and imaginative discussion.
