GALWAY HAS become a regular point of pilgrimage for Alabama 3 who make a welcome return to the city to play an 'acoustic and unplugged' show at The Loft @ Seven, Bridge Street, on Friday October 2 at 10pm.
Exploring a more acoustic side to their music has been something the Brixton band has returned to time and again over the last few years. In 2008, Alabama 3 played an acoustic concert at Brixton Prison, by special invitation of the prison governor, for the charity ‘Jail Guitar Doors’. A review in The Guardian said: "It was the only gig in town where you had to be on the guest list to get out rather than in. And while the chapel at HMP Brixton, South London, may not have quite the capacity of the Albert Hall or the cachet of Koko, this week it hosted one of those shows likely to be remembered by every one of its extremely select audience."
February 2011 saw the release of the acoustic album There will be peace in the valley...when we get the keys to the mansion on the hill. More recently, Alabama 3 have developed a set that pays homage to classic blues musicians like Mississippi Fred McDowell, Howlin' Wolf, and John Lee Hooker, to present "our own narco-acoustic slant on Alabama 3 and the music that has inspired us along the way".
As guitarist Rockfree Bass said: "I've developed a style of guitar, that combines elements of both MacDowell and White, with a hint of banjo picking, and tried to give it a more modern, urban twist.” Complete with Larry Love's gravelly vocals, Aurora Dawn's soul crooning, and Nick Reynolds on harmonica, Alabama 3 are promising Galway fans a raucous show.
