On Culture Night Galway Arts Centre will host three workshops. For ages 8 & under: make your own musical instrument workshop & jamming session with Galway based jazz musician and educator Matthew Berrill. For 8 + there is a music making class with Rory Grubb & his Ceramaphone. Grubb, a Dublin based musician has created an original electric ceramaphone from high quality, tuned ceramic pots and various electrical components. For 12+ Electronic Music making workshop with Ed Devane. Ed Devane delivers instrument building and music production workshops to children, young people and adults. In his workshops he will cover a wide range of topics including elements of physics, history of music and instrument design from different cultures, group discussions, teamwork exercises, recording technologies, electronics, and group music making. Berrill, Grubb and Devane will then play 20 minute sets each from 8pm and 9pm in the galleries, which will be open to the public aswell as workshop participants. Please note that participants for Matthew Berrill and Rory Grubb’s workshops must be accompanied by a guardian. UnravelRois is a short film by Andrew Duggan in collaboration with Olwen Fouéré and Siobhán Dempsey, filmed on the Aran islands where the pattern of interlacing lines provided the ideal geographical landscape in which to site the work. The film explores the relationships between both individual and collective memory and the natural built and trace landscapes. The physical UnravelRois process of unravelling a ball of wool around a space and then rewinding it acts to parallel internal thought processes.

The hall is the oldest building to be excavated within the old walls of Galway and acted as the town hall in the fledgling city. ConTempo Quartet will perform at the Red Earl's Hall at 7pm.

Giddy Biddies 'Infinity Project'

'Infinity' is a socially engaged art installation designed to provoke the viewer to stand up and acknowledge their part in the infinite link that perpetuates forced migration. In association with Culture Night 2015 and Galway 2020, a 'twenty foot' container will be placed in Mainguard Street Galway. Eight volunteers will be locked inside the container with only water to drink and a bucket for waste, simulating the conditions experienced by forced migration. The container will be painted black inside to replicate real conditions, there will be no comforts and no communication with the outside world. Participants will remain inside the container for 24 hours. Not to be missed!

Pianist Elena Gekker, who herself hails from Russia, will present an exploration of the piano music of Irishman John Field, who is credited with inventing the 'Nocturne' and who lived and worked in Russia, with the music of his contemporaries. Done using short and exciting pieces of music especially chosen for young children, and linked up by Elena in a beautifully constructed narrative. The concert will start at 7pm and last 1 hour, in the sitting room of St Mary's College, St Mary's Rd. We also encourage the idea of children being able to interact better with the performer so those that wish to do so may bring cushions to sit on up close to the piano.

What promises to be Ireland’s biggest ever Retro Gaming event will take place on Culture Night in the Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland located in the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at NUI Galway. Attendees will enjoy the thrills of playing the great classic arcade and video games of the 1970s through to the 1990s such as Asteroids, Pacman, Space Invaders, Super Mario, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot and Pong on legendary vintage consoles and computers such as Atari, Amiga, Commodore Amiga, Sega Megadrive and Nintendo. Mentors from Insight, local digital maker clubs and the Galway city Coderdojo club will introduce visitors to the coding behind their own creative projects and help visitors to create their own games.
