Aran fisherman dies in trawler accident

A young Aran fisherman has died this week following an accident on board a trawler in Donegal.

James Joyce (27 ) of Cill Ronáin in Inis Mór, fell while cleaning out stagnant water from tanks in a refrigeration unit on the Galway-registered trawler Oilean an Oir at Killybegs Harbour at around lunchtime on Monday.

A co-worker who attempted to rescue him, a man in his forties from the Philippines, was overcome by toxic fumes and was left in a critical condition as a result of the incident.

Both men were brought to Letterkenny General Hospital following the incident, where Mr Joyce died later that day.

The Marine Casualty Investigations Board and the Health and Safety Authority have launched separate investigations into the incident.
