It has been a good season so far for Tony Ward's Galway senior camogie players and they hope to continue their winning ways when they face Wexford in the All-Ireland semi-final this Saturday in Nowlan Park (3.30pm ).
The team has been in good form. Having played 10 games thus far, they have won nine and drawn just one - that draw was way back in the first fixture of the year against Limerick in the league, so the omens are positive for a victory on Saturday.
Galway have already beaten Wexford in the group stages of the championship (1-11 to 0-6 ), but the Galway women have not played for four weeks since they defeated Limerick on July 18. Wexford, under the management of Colm McGee, enjoyed extra preparation with their recent wins over Cork and Dublin on the August bank holiday weekend. They also have a few players back from injury, so they are expected to be a different proposition in Saturday.
Galway and Mullagh star and regular full-back Sarah Dervan is not taking anything for granted in two days' time.
“All-Ireland semi-finals come down to performance. Who wants it more on the day, who has the bigger appetite, and who is willing to die for that ball?
"We have been doing the right preparation all season and hopefully we will come out right on the day, but we are under no illusions about what’s in front of us.”
Experienced team manager Tony Ward will look to big performances from former All-Ireland winning captain and wing-back Lorraine Ryan, Siobhán Coen, and the midfield duo of team captain Niamh Kilkenny and Emma Kilkenny.
Up front Galway will be looking to Niamh McGrath, Molly Dunne, Ann-Maire Starr and the impressive Ailish O'Reilly to provide the match-winning scores.
In the other semi-final, Cork will take on Kilkenny in Walsh Park on Sunday.
