Massive funds for Galway roads announced

A total of €155,324,488 has been allocated to Galway City Council and Galway County Council in the National Roads Programme 2009.

Of this €154,849,488 has been allocated to Galway County Council. Of that €152,040,000 is for the improvement of roads and €2,809,488 is for maintenance.

Among the roads approved for funding are the Galway City Outer Bypass (€2.9 million ); Galway/ Ballinasloe (€23.8 million ); Gort to Tuam PPP (€24.6 million ); Gort to Crusheen (€27.4 million ); Derrylea pilot realignment (€4.7 million ); N59 bridge rehabilitation (€850,000 ); Moycullen bypass (€300,000 ); and Roscahill realignment (€650,000 ).

A total of €475,000 has been allocated to the Galway City Council.

The allocations have been welcomed by Galway West TD and chairman of the Oireachtas Transport Committee Frank Fahey, saying the allocation to Galway was “one of the highest in the country”. The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív said: “There is a need to improve these roads and I am pleased that this funding has been approved, especially in light of the Country’s economic difficulties.”
