Cancer Care West in conjunction with Mayo Cancer Support Association has set about the task of collecting 120,000 bras and forming an unbroken chain which will be in excess of 70 miles long.
In any language this is an enormous task but with the good vibes it is receiving and the spirit in which it is being undertaken the charity believes that they have a fun event that will be a topic of conversation in pubs, clubs, homes etc for the foreseeable future.
Over the next few months we will have celebrities both national and international lending support. Updates will be announced in all the papers, radio and TV stations so that the impetus will continue to encourage and instill in the public an unprecedented level of interest.
Cancer Care West is a not for profit organisation, dedicated to supporting those whose lives have been affected by a cancer diagnosis. Its essence is cancer patient care and all its activities fit within this vision. Its aim is to enhance patient care and well being and to provide supports to cancer patients and their families during and after their treatment. Cancer Care West also provides cancer awareness and educational programmes and undertakes research on patient care.
Cancer Care West opened its residence and cancer support centre Inis Aoibhinn in March 2007.
Inis Aoibhinn provides residential accommodation for patients travelling to Galway for radiotherapy treatment at UHG and comprises 30 en-suite bedrooms with facilities available to patients’ partners or guests to share. It also provides a cancer support centre for anyone affected by cancer, offering a range of psychological counselling services, complementary therapies, information and courses.
The drop in centre provides an opportunity to call in to Inis Aoibhinn to find out about the services available or to have a chat with one of the oncology nurses. The centre is open to patients , families and friends of cancer sufferers. It is now trying to extend its services throughout the western region. All services are available at no cost to the patient.
You may ask how is this going to create awareness and raise much needed funds? Cancer Care West and the Mayo Cancer Support Association believe that the publicity generated from the attempt will make people aware of the services they provide and in so doing allow people the opportunity to support them with practical help such as a donation with each bra submitted.
So to get involved with this joint fundraiser between Cancer Care West and Mayo Cancer Support it is very simple. To break this world record they are asking the women of the west to send a bra and a donation to either Cancer Care West at University Hospital Galway or Mayo Cancer Support, Castlebar, Co Mayo.
