The history of Ireland will be the focus of Scéala Éireann, a new series of programmes that will start on Raidió na Gaeltachta in February.
The series of 26 programmes aims to provide listeners with an overview of the history of Ireland, with each programme focusing on a significant event or milestone in that history.
The programmes will be 12 minutes in length, and will each feature a short radio essay presented by a panel of historians, including Prof Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, Professor Dáibhí Ó Cróinín, Dr Nollaig Ó Muraíle, Dr Niall Ó Cíosáin, and Dr Máire Harris. Prof Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh is also script consultant for the series.
The series will be presented in chronological order, starting with the arrival of Christianity to Ireland, and finishing with our most recent history including the violence in Northern Ireland, and the Celtic Tiger economy.
Other subjects covered include the arrival of the Vikings in Ireland, the colonisation of the country, O’Connell and Catholic emancipation, The Famine, and the 1916 Rising.
Scéala Éireann can be heard on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta on Saturday mornings at 9.45am, starting Saturday February 7.
