The Tonabrucky 6km Challenge celebrates its fifth year of existence this June and organisers are calling on all runners, walkers, and strollers to take part and make this year one to remember. The race, which is hosted by Rahoon/Newcastle Hurling Club, will take place on Saturday June 6 at 6pm.
The road race, which is sponsored by 37 West, is an Athletics Association of Ireland certified event. It will take place in the Rahoon area and will incorporate the now famous Tonabrucky Hill. This year all proceeds raised via the event will go to Rahoon Hurling Club and Gorta, Self Help Africa Galway.
Race organiser Lisa Regan said of the race: “This is the first time we will be running for a charity that works on an international level and we are delighted to be able to do this. The race has raised more than €30,000 over the course of the past four years and is now firmly fixed on both the running and local calendar for the people of Rahoon and Galway. We get runners from across Galway and each year we always have a few international runners with some coming from as far away as Australia and Hawaii. Every year, people leave the race buzzing with excitement as they have completed a really tough circuit. It is just a feeling you cannot beat.”
The cost of entry for the event is €20 for a runner and walker, and €5 for a junior entrant. This year there is also a team competition and the club is challenging all local sporting outfits to race against one another to see who is the fittest team in the locality. Teams of up to four people can be registered.
