Volkswagen's new Transporter van breaks cover

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has shown its new sixth-generation of the Transporter van to a select group of journalists.

Volkswagen says it has updated key technical features to offer better safety (with the latest driver assistance systems ), improved comfort and convenience (with adaptive chassis, electrically adjustable seats and electric tailgate ), and greater driving dynamics in combination with improved fuel economy.

The new Transporter is distinctive and immediately recognisable as a Transporter, with its styling evolutionary. However, Volkswagen Commercials Vehicles points out that the design incorporates sharper and more distinctive lines.

Since the launch of Transporter in 1950, some 12 million vehicles have been produced. Although the Transporter went on sale in Germany and the rest of Europe 65 years ago, right-hand drive versions were only available to special order until 1954 when they became standard production line models. Since then more than 300,000 Transporters have been sold in Britain.

Volkswagen has added new engines with stop/start function as standard, and it says it also has included new entertainment and satellite navigation system, the latter at least probably as an optional extra in Ireland.

The sixth-generation Transporter will arrive in Ireland later this year. Specification and pricing will be confirmed closer to that time.
