The United States Ambassador to Ireland will face a peace protest, in opposition to American wars across the world, when he arrives in the city today to address a Galway Chamber business lunch.
The protest, which is being organised by the Galway Alliance Against War, will take place outside the Meyrick Hotel, Eyre Square at 12 noon, where the ambassador, Kevin O’Malley, is due to speak.
GAAW spokesperson Niall Farrell said the protest is “in solidarity with the millions of people whose lives have been lost or devastated due to the warmongering policies of Washington over the past 14 years”. It is also in solidarity with TDs Clare Daly and Mick Wallace, who face prison sentences for their opposition to the use of Shannon Airport by the US military.
According to Mr Farrell, recent research has revealed that 1.3 million people have been killed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan due to Washington’s ‘war on terror’. As a result he said the ambassador “should not be feted, he should be ostracised”.
Ambassador O’Malley is to address the Galway Chamber Spring Business Lunch, sponsored by KPMG. He was appointed to the position last September. He has also served as an attorney and adjunct professor both at Washington University School of Law and St Louis University School of Law. He has been consistently chosen by the editors of The Best Lawyers in America for his work in medical negligence defence and white collar criminal defences. He also served as an officer in the United States Army Reserve.
