NORA CRUBS, a one time Quay Street venue, described by some as “Galway’s first nightclub” will be remembered and celebrated at an event at the Cúirt Fringe next week.
Nora Crubs, aka Dilleen’s, aka The Kasbah, was a late-night eatery in the 1950s and 1960s. It was run by sisters Nora and Delia Kelly, and served stew, chips, and crubeens. Admittance was severely restricted. A knock on the locked door would be met with “Who’s out?” If the answer did not please then the customer remained outside. It was not unusual for a sing-song to break out, accompanied by Delia on the accordion.
Nora Crubs will be remembered by Tom Kenny, Dick Byrne, The Voice Squad’s Fran McPhail, and poet Gerard Hanberry, whose poem The Kasbah On Quay Street has now been inscribed in stone and will be unveiled at this event which takes place at 6.30pm on Tuesday April 21 at Tigh Neachtain’s. There will also be memories, anecdotes, poems and songs to follow.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
