After last weekend's abject second-half performance in their 2-10 to 0-10 home defeat to Laois, the Galway footballers need to rediscover their footballing mojo.
They now face a high-flying Roscommon in round six of the league in Hyde Park on Sunday, at the unusual time of 1.30pm, with Michael Duffy (Sligo ) the designated referee.
The Rossies, promoted from division three at the end of last season, are making a bold bid to continue their promotion trail. Following two impressive victories over Meath and Kildare, they have moved into second place with seven points.
Roscommon posted 0-24 in their win over the Lillies last Sunday and they are motoring well under John Evans.
Their u-21s also hammered Sligo last week in the Connacht semi-final, and they will expect to have another two league points and one foot in division one for 2016 by 3pm this Sunday.
Galway manager Kevin Walsh was disappointed to see his charges lose a substantial lead for the third league game in a row in the defeat to Laois.
His team led by 0-10 to 1-1 at half time, but, similar to the games against Down and Cavan, the team did not kick on to win the game.
That they did not score at all in the second half was very frustrating for all concerned and the concession of the two goals as a direct result of huge Galway errors will have done little for the management team's blood pressure.
Walsh did not hide his disappointment after a third consecutive defeat, but he acknowledged that their fate still rests in their hands.
"A few mistakes really cost us at vital times in the Laois game to put us on the back foot. It’s awfully disappointing. We led by six points at half time and we threw it away again.
“It’s three losses in-a-row. The Down defeat started a downward spiral trend. There’s a feeling that game was left behind, which shouldn’t happen to a confident team. Confidence is down and that’s going to take a bit of lifting up, but that’s what we have to do now.”
“Everything is still completely in our own hands, and we are totally focussed on the challenge we face against Roscommon this Sunday."
On the plus side regular goalkeeper Manus Breathnach is likely to be able to resume this Sunday between the posts. He was unavailable last Sunday and his probable return will add some confidence from a defensive perspective.
Also the Corofin players trained with the Galway squad this week and, assuming they are injury free, they will be available for selection for Hyde Park.
Ideally both Gary Sice and Micheal Lundy will be ready for a return to competitive action in the maroon colours and their experience and self-belief would be a boost to the forward division.
Other Corofin players who are expected to link up with the county training panel, injuries permitting, include Ciarán McGrath, Ian Burke, Thomas Healy, Ronan Steede, Michael Farragher and county u-21 player Liam Silke.
Going to Roscommon looking for a win is rarely easy, but on the back of a hat-trick of defeats and with the home side full of confidence, it makes the task even harder.
The return of a few of the Corofin lads is a plus, but even with that impetus and based on both teams respective form over the past few weeks, it is incredibly difficult not to predict a home win for Roscommon.
