Classics lecture for ‘Ma Heavey’

Readers with an interest in the ancient world will be very welcome to attend a public event hosted by NUI Galway tonight.

The 2015 Margaret Heavey Memorial Lecture will take place at 6.30pm tonight Thursday March 26 in the Joseph Larmor Theatre on the Arts & Sciences Building Concourse.

This year’s speaker is Dr Roman Roth from the University of Cape Town, whose talk is entitled “Towns and territories in Roman Italy”.

The annual lecture is held in honour of Prof Margaret Heavey, a native of Athenry who taught Latin (through Irish ) from 1929, was later Professor of Classics from 1958, and served as Dean of Arts from 1970 to 1976 before retiring the following year.

Prof. Heavey (known affectionately as “Ma Heavey” ) was widely respected not just for a formidable command of her field, but also for her talents as a teacher and her exceptionally kind and caring attitude to students.

All welcome. Enquiries to: [email protected]
