THE WORLD premiere of a new piece of music, inspired by James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, will be held in the Nuns Island Theatre this Saturday at 8pm.
‘The Rushes By The Gray Nuns Pond’, written by Irish composer Seán MacErlaine for clarinet, string quartet, and live electronics, will be performed by the composer and the RTÉ ConTempo Quartet.
Speaking about the piece, MacErlaine said: “Using combinations of graphic scores, improvisation, collage and a personalised language, this piece works with the poetic elements of the book, without an overt attempt to translate the text, creating an atmospheric sound world both immersive and otherworldly.”
MacErlaine’s music mixes folk, free improvisation, jazz, and trad. He will also perform pieces from his recent A Slender Song album. The show is the final concert in The Galway Music Residency’s New Music:Different Sounds series.
Tickets are €10/8 or €6 (students ), and are available on the door or through [email protected]
