HOWEVER YOU interpret Good Friday, as an act of selfless atonement, one of history’s most notorious miscarriages of justice, or a story of grief, suffering, and loss, there is music to capture it all.
Some of that music will be performed by the Collegium choir, under conductor Mark Duley at the Juxta Crucem: Music for Good Friday concert in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Good Friday April 3 at 5pm.
The programme includes Palestrina’s Stabat Mater, excerpts from Victoria’s Tenebrae Responsories, as well as works by Francis Poulenc and Orlandus Lassus.
Collegium is Galway’s newest choir, the fifth ensemble to be added to the St Nicholas Schola Cantorum. Collegium intends to focus on Renaissance music.
New Zealander Mark Duley has held posts such as director of music at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin; chorusmaster to the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir; and artistic director of the Irish Baroque Orchestra. He is now pipeworks artistic director, organist of the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas, and founder-director of St Nicholas Schola Cantorum.
