This yar’s 36th Galway Head of the River Rowing will take place on Saturday.
Recognised as one of the top rowing events on the Irish calendar, some 300 oarsmen and women are expected to compete, and organisers NUIG Rowing and Tribesmen Rowing Clubs will be hoping the weather plays its part after last year’s Head was one of several in Ireland to be cancelled due to poor river conditions.
Sponsored by Boston Scientific, the Galway Head features three events which start at the ‘the cut’ at the mouth of the Corrib and finish under the Quincentenary Bridge - the perfect viewing platform for specatators.
The Galway Head normally attracts large numbers of entrants with most clubs keen to get out on the water and test themselves over the three mile course with up to 100 boats in each race.
The categories, for both men and women, are junior 16, junior 18, novice, intermediate, senior and master, and within each category there are sculls, doubles, pairs, quads, and eights.
The three events start at 10am, 1.30pm, and 4pm, with prize giving in the University Bar from 6pm.
