Bonus-point win keeps Wegians on top

Galwegians 31-5 bonus-point win over Malone in Belfast keeps them on top of the UBL Division 1B with two games remaining.

With Garryowen still just two points behind, the title is likely to be decided in the final league fixture when the two sides meet in Crowley Park on April 11.

Wegians left it late before turning on the style in the final quarter to put the game beyond doubt on Saturday.

Outhalf Aidan Moynihan put Wegians ahead with a third-minute penalty, but it took another 20 minutes before they added to their score when Moynihan doubled the lead after the hosts were penalised for hands in the ruck.

Although Wegians lost hooker Ross Fitzgerald to the bin in a scrappy encounter, fullback John Cleary produced a trademark finish after the break with Moynihan converting for a 13-0 lead.

Malone, however, responded with a try by Neil Burns, but Wegians finished with a flourish. Replacement prop Conor Kyne made a dramatic impact in the scrum, and Moynihan added his third penalty to stretch the advantage to 16-5. The Blues really cut loose in the final quarter with tries from lock Marty Cummins, Rory Parata and replacement hooker Jack Dinneen.
