Patients attending a minor injuries unit are in and out of the centre in less than an hour, according to the Roscommon Hospital-Saolta University Health Care Group.
The facility at Roscommon Hospital, which serves a wide area including east Galway, south-east Mayo, Athlone, Longford and south Leitrim, is located in the urgent care centre. It is open daily (including weekends ) from 8am to 8pm.
In a recent survey of waiting times, patients attending the unit waited on average no more than 58 minutes at the department from registration at reception to discharge.
The fees are the same as for attending an emergency department, which means that there is no charge for medical cardholders or for patients with a valid medical/GP referral letter.
The unit is staffed by a team led by a consultant surgeon and includes doctors, nurses, radiographers and physiotherapists.
It treats minor injuries in adults and in children aged five and upwards, including suspected broken bones (from knees to toes and from collar bones to finger tips ); sprains and strains; facial injuries; minor burns and scalds; minor chest and head injuries; and wounds, bites, cuts, grazes and scalp lacerations.
