Prospects for Galway builders and contractors to be outlined at briefing tonight

Builders and contractors throughout Galway will be given an update on the prospects for house building in Galway at a free briefing taking place in Galway on Thursday March 5. The event will also address the changes to public procurement for the construction sector and which will have massive implications for all those looking to win local public contracts such as schools, roads, social housing or water works.

The event is being organised by the Construction Industry Federation (CIF ) and will take place in the Pillo Hotel at 9.30am. All builders and contractors from Galway can attend for free once they register in advance.

Other subjects of interest to those in the construction sector will also be covered. These include the latest on the Construction Contracts Act, the shifting industrial relations situation throughout the industry, the Government's plans to introduce Project Bank Accounts, the progress of the Construction 2020 strategy announced last year and other measures aimed at boosting construction activity throughout the country.

Speaking about the event, CIF Director General Tom Parlon who will drress the briefing said that the prospects for house builders and contractors in Galway has been difficult in recent years. While the industry is starting to see an increase in activity, this has been predominantly in the Dublin and Greater Dublin area. Unfortunately many construction operators in Galway are yet to feel the pick up.

"There has been a very limited level of house building taking place in Galway. We will be discussing the various issues that are holding back house building, how the market is expected to develop in the coming years as well as the steps being taken to help boost activity in this part of the sector,” he said.

"This briefing has been arranged to give builders and contractors a better idea of what is going on in the industry. We will be talking about the various measures that are currently being implemented to boost construction work and to allow more viable projects to go on site. We want to ensure that builders and contractors throughout Galway are aware of all the information of relevance to them so they can be making the right decisions for them and their businesses.

"We are expecting a strong crowd at the briefing and I hope that all builders and contractors from Galway will take the time to attend this free event," Mr Parlon concluded.

Due to space limitations all those looking to attend the briefing must register in advance. To book a free place builders and contractors can email Brid Cody in the CIF on [email protected] or call 021 4351410.
