Crowley Park hosts must-win local derby

The second of this season’s AIB League city derby clashes between Galwegians and Corinthians takes place under lights in Glenina tomorrow (7.15pm ).

On paper this is a top versus bottom division 1B encounter, but that counts for little in a local derby where traditionally there has been little more than a score between them.

Galwegians, who won the corresponding fixture at Cloonacauneen in November by 18-10, are obvious favourites. At home and with momentum, Galwegians have a two-point lead over second-placed Garryowen, and seven clear of third-placed Trinity.

With four games remaining, there is much at stake for both sides. Corinthians, currently in the perilous relegation position, need to get something from this game to give them hopes of retaining their division 1b status. Although at the bottom of the table, there are only five points separating them from sixth placed Belfast Harlequins, who they face on March 7 in Ulster, so any of five teams, including Shannon, UL Bohs, and Malone, could be relegated.

Visitors to Crowley Park tomorrow night can expect a titantic struggle between these two rivals. Galwegians, having amassed seven try bonus points, have the superior strike power, but that could be nullified by weather, and a determined Corinthians.
