NUIG gay society to host marriage equality event

A public meeting on the marriage equality referendum takes place in NUI Galway on Wednesday February 18 at 7pm, and will be addressed by Green leader Eamon Ryan.

The meeting, which takes place in the McMunn Theatre, in the main concourse, and is organised by the Gay in Galway Society, will discuss how and why the gay marriage referendum “is a momentous event in Irish public affairs” and how it can lay the grounds for LGBT equality in Ireland. A Q&A session will follow and the public, as well as students, are invited to attend.

Meanwhile, a motion before a recent city council meeting by Labour councillor Niall McNelis, calling on the council to support “the same rights and entitlements to civil marriages for all citizens regardless of race, religion, or sexuality”, was passed.

Speaking afterwards Cllr McNelis said: “I am glad I had the full support of all those present in the chamber when it came before a vote. This referendum is about equality. It is about extending an equal right to marry to all couples. It is about removing all barriers which deny some couples the chance of marrying and of having relationships that are constitutionally protected. This proposal does not in anyway affect the current Constitutional provision on marriage.”
