Beethoven’s piano sonatas - live

REGARDED AS one of the finest interpreters of Beethoven’s music, French pianist François-Frédéric Guy will be in concert in Galway next week.

Guy will play Beethoven’s Opus 31 piano sonatas in the NUI Galway Aula Maxima on Friday February 20 at 8pm. The sonatas show the German composer’s attempting to break from classical conventions and establish his own individual voice. The programme is the charming sonata No 1 in G major, the tempestuousness No 2 in D minor ‘Tempest’, and the pastoral No 3 in E flat major ‘Hunt’.

Guy has performed with the Berlin Symphony, London Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, and San Francisco Symphony. In 2013 a box set featuring the live recording of the complete 32 sonatas was released by the French label Zig-Zag Territoires. For Chandos Guy will record an album with fellow-French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.

This is the Emily Anderson Annual Memorial Concert in honour the memory of the Galway woman who collected, translated, and edited the full correspondence of both Mozart and Beethoven.

Tickets are €18/14/6 through Music for Galway (091 - 705962, www.musicforgalway.ie ) or Opus 2, 4 High Street.
