MORE THAN 500 schoolchildren across Galway city will take part in One Book One Galway - an initiative to encourage children to read one specific book - which will be launched this Thursday [February 12] at 11.30am.
The initiative will be formally launched by the Mayor of Galway City Donal Lyons in the Galway City Library. Also present will be Scottish author Rab Fulton, who will be telling stories and tales. The aim is to bring children together for a community wide experience to get them talking and to develop appreciation for reading as a gateway to learning.
The chosen book for this year is Eithne Massey’s The Secret of Kells, which was also made into an Oscar Award winning film in 2009. An action packed adventure, it centres on 12-year-old Brendan who, with the help of Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, must fight Vikings and a serpent god to find a crystal and complete the legendary Book of Kells.
There will be a brochure of events available on the day including a visit by author Eithne Massey to Ballybane and Westside Libraries, a visit by History Live to all participating schools, and a special viewing of The Secret of Kells in The Eye cinema.
The initiative is jointly spearheaded in the city by Home School community liaison service from Galway city schools and the Galway City Library service.
