Father of two dies in crash outside his home in Connemara

Gardai are continuing their investigations following a fatal crash in Connemara earlier this week.

Mairtín McGrath was knocked down on the R320 road outside his home in Cill Chiaráin on Tuesday morning. It is understood he was talking to a friend when the collision occurred at around 11am. Emergency services rushed to the scene but Mr McGrath, who was in his fourties, was pronounced dead. His body was taken to University Hospital Galway for a post mortem examination.

The elderly man who was driving the vehicle which struck Mr McGrath remained at the scene. He was not injured but is still extremely traumatised.

The road between Cill Chiaráin and Rosmuc was closed for a number of hours on Tuesday to facilitate a technical examination.

Gardai in Clifden are investigating the incident and are appealing to witnesses to come forward. Anybody with information relating to the crash is asked to contact Clifden Garda Station on 095 - 22500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
