The Telecommunications and Internet Federation (TIF ), the IBECgroup that represents the telecoms sector, today called on companies and individuals in the West to engage in the Department of Communications consultation on high speed broadband, which closes next Thursday February 12. Last year, the Department announced a major initiative to subsidise a high speed broadband (30Mbps ) network to ensure every home and business is covered. To benefit, it's important that people check to see if they are covered by the existing plans.
Director of the Telecommunications and Internet Federation, Torlach Denihan, said: "Currently, there are a number of areas across the regions in Ireland where there is little or no high speed broadband coverage.
“Where it is not commercially viable to build a high speed broadband network, a state subsidy will be provided. This will supplement major investment by the telecoms companies, exceeding €2.5 billion over the last five years.
"It is crucial that individuals check the interactive map online, before Thursday 12 February, to see if they will be covered by commercially provided high speed broadband by the end of 2016, or whether access via a state subsidised network will be needed.
