When the cellist met the DJ

THE CELLIST Matthew Barley is passionate about improvisation, multi-arts projects, and new music, which explains his joining forces with leading Galway DJ Cyril Briscoe.

Barley, the music director of BBC2’s Classical Star, and Briscoe - best known as one half of the DJ team 110th Street and The Hive clubnights, as well as a Music for Galway board member - will perform together in the Druid Mick Lally Theatre on Thursday February 5.

The concert programme features work by Bach, Britten, Metcalf, Gabrielli, Kodály, and Giovanni Sollima’s collaborative ‘Lamentatio’ for cello and electronics. There will also be improvisations around Gregorian chant and Syrian music.

For the show, the theatre will be transformed into the Maroon Lounge, Galway’s version of Berlin and London’s Yellow Lounge. This means Barley’s performance will be embedded in a club-style setting, with Briscoe DJing music ranging from chamber to garage, before and after the performance./

Doors are at 7.30pm. Tickets are €18/14/10 from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, [email protected] ); Opus II, High Street; or www.tht.ie

Barley and Briscoe will also present a workshop on music making and the ‘World of Cello’ at The Cube, NUI Galway, on Friday February 6 at 2pm. Booking is through 091 - 586706.
