Connaughton calls for Knockma lands to be bought and developed

Enhanced walking amenities on Knockma near Tuam could be developed if land at the top of the 170-metre hill is purchased by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

This is the view of Fine Gael Galway East TD Paul Connaughton, in support of a a local committee of walking enthusiasts, who in recent years, have been campaigning for the NPWS to purchase the private lands on the hill so as to ensure better access to the site, which has long been associated as a mythical burial place of Queen Medb of Connacht.

“Walkers and heritage enthusiasts travel to Knockma from all over the county and province due to the fantastic walking trail currently available,” said Dep Connaughton. “It is my belief the purchase of this land will finish off this fantastic project.”

Following an invitation from Dep Connaughton, the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys recently visited Knockma. According to the Galway TD she was “very impressed both by the walking trail and scenic views” and he pledged to continue to “push for a positive response in relation to this matter”.
