Revenge, romance, and renaissance drama

The Dutchess Of Malfi at the Black Box Theatre

DOOMED ROMANCE, violence, revenge, and misogyny erupt into force in The Duchess Of Malfi, one of the greatest tragedies of English renaissance drama, yet one that is rarely performed in Ireland.

That will change when Galway based Theatrecorp, one of Ireland’s finest theatre companies, stages John Webster’s 1612–13 play The Duchess of Malfi - originally published as The Tragedy of the Dutchesse of Malfy - in the Black Box Theatre from Tuesday February 3 to Saturday 7 at 8pm.

A violent play about a society riddled with corruption and dysfunction in high places, Webster’s work begins as a love story, with a duchess who marries beneath her class, and ends as a nightmarish tragedy as her two brothers exact their revenge, destroying themselves in the process.

The play is directed by Max Hafler. The cast is Zita Monahan, Daniel Guinnane, Reidin Ní Thuama, Darragh O’Brien, Conor Geoghegan, Muireann Ní Raghallaigh, Mary Monaghan, and Eoin Dillon.

Tickets are available from the Town Hall Theatre on 091 - 569777 or www.tht.ie
