IT IS one of the most famous works in Western art and the most widely known work of 17th century Dutch painter Jan Vermeer. It is Girl With A Pearl Earring.
The 1665 painting is now the subject of a new documentary, Girl With a Pearl Earring, which will be shown at The Eye Cinema, Wellpark, on Tuesday January 13 at 6.30pm.
There are many unanswered questions about this artwork. Who was the model Vermeer used for the painting? Why was it painted? Why is it in such contrast to Vermeer’s main body of work, which are largely interior scenes of daily life? How has the painting become so iconic? The documentary will take audiences on a detective journey as it seeks to answer these questions.
