Our Lady’s Boys Club president wins Volunteer of the Year award

James P Cunningham, the president of Our Lady’s Boys Club, was named Galway City Credit Union’s Volunteer of the Year at the sixth Annual Mayor’s Awards for Galway, which were held in The Black Box.

The Mayor of Galway Cllr Padraig Conneely presented the top award to Mr Cunningham in recognition of his work over the years on behalf of OLBC and in particular for his work in recent years in securing funding for a new club house in Sea Road.

Dozens of individuals and groups received certificates from the Mayor following their nomination for the awards, which celebrate voluntary activity in community life in the city.

The arts, culture, heritage, and Cursaí Gaeilge award went to James Casserley, for his contribution to the local and social history of Galway. The local environment, neighbourhood, and residents’ groups award was presented to Martin ‘Motch’ Daly for his work in Mervue.

The social and community support award was presented to the Galway Hospice Foundation Volunteer Group for its support and service to the patients of Galway Hospice; the social and community support award went to the Merlin Park Walkers & Friends Group for its fundraising activities;

The positive ageing award was won by Phil Carey for her many years of support to the residents of St Francis’ Home, Newcastle.

The sports, recreation, children and youth award went to Pat Regan, John Ruane, and Peter Curran for their work as the management team of St Michael’s Senior Football Team. The Young Volunteers of the Year award went to the volunteer youth leaders of shOUT! for their work in developing a support group for young lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth in Galway.

Each of the winners received a Galway Crystal trophy and a cheque for €700.
