Irish rugby international among NUIG Alumni Award winners

The former Irish rugby international Ciaran FitzGerald is among the 2009 NUI Galway Alumni Awards winners.

The awards, which recognise individual excellence and achievements among the university’s 65,000+ graduates worldwide, will be presented at the 10th annual Gala Banquet and Alumni Awards ceremony on Saturday March 7 in the Radisson SAS Hotel.

This years’ winners are the former Irish international rugby captain and Triple Crown winner Ciaran FitzGerald who will be presented with the Aer Arann Alumni Award for Sports Achievement and Leadership.

The AIB Alumni Award for Literature, Communication and the Arts will go to Dr Brendan O’Connor, the founder of Cois Cladaigh Choir; the Bank of Ireland Alumni Award for Business and Commerce will go to Mike Higgins, the managing director of CIBC Real Estate Finance Group.

The Duais Hewlett-Packard don Ghaeilge will presented to Pádraig Ó Ceithearnaigh, Leas-ardstiúthóir chomhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge. The Medtronic Alumni Award for Healthcare and Medical Science will be given to Professor Michael O’Brien, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, Boston University School of Medicine and chief of the Department of Anatomic Pathology, Boston Medical Center.

The NUI Galway Alumni Award for Law, Public Service and Government will go to John Hegarty, provost, Trinity College Dublin; the Alumni Award for engineering, IT, and mathematics will go to Finian O’Sullivan, the founder and former CEO of Burren Energy; and the Seavite Alumni Award for Natural Science will go to Dr Catherine Caulfield, chief executive of the Charles River Laboratories Preclinical Services Ireland.
