Raise awareness of free parking schemes, Higgins tells council

The Galway County Council must “move swiftly” to raise public awareness of the Christmas free parking initiative, according to Labour senator Lorraine Higgins.

Sen Higgins made her call after being contacted by constituents who put money in meters where free parking is in place, before realising that this was the case.

“The Christmas free-parking initiative on-street and in council-owned car parks is an excellent practical and badly-needed boost for local businesses,” she said, “but it would be a terrible waste if this was squandered due to lack of public awareness.”

Sen Higgins said the council must “do all it can to bring free parking to the attention of town centre users” and she called on councillors and TDs to do likewise.
